Stay safe on the road this season

Christmas is practically upon us, and the holiday season is in full gear. You might already have attended numerous holiday events or parties, or you might just be gearing up for a weekend of visiting family followed by relaxation before a night of New Year's parties. Whatever you're planning, take some steps to stay safe on the road way this year.

First, never get behind the wheel if you've been drinking. Make sure someone is designated to drive as you visit with family and friends, or make arrangements to stay over until you are able to drive safely.

Second, avoid distractions in your car, especially when you are driving in dangerous winter conditions. Ask kids to be quiet so you can concentrate on the road. Consider keeping crayons and activity books, along with book lights, in the vehicle so kids have something to do on long drives.

Third, pay attention to other drivers on the road. Driving defensively and taking precautionary action as soon as possible is one of the best ways to reduce the severity of an accident if not avoid it completely.

Finally, don't drive when you're tired. That means leaving a gathering or party at an appropriate time, not matter how much fun you're having. You might also consider staying in a hotel or making other arrangements if you're visiting friends or relatives several hours away.

Since all the planning in the world can't stop every unfortunate accident, make sure you know your rights and have a plan in place should an incident occur. With drunk drivers on the road during the holiday season, you could be the one who suffers. We've written about what you can do after an accident before, and our firm is always here, ready to assist if you are the unfortunate victim of such an accident.
