Details emerge of fatal drunk driving accident in Virginia

As the driver in a fatal drunk driving accident made his first court appearance, disturbing details of the accident came to light. According to a news video, the defendant, a 31-year-old man, hung his head during his court arraignment, his face apparently still swollen from the accident.

Sources say the defendant crashed headfirst into an 18-year-old high school student's SUV on the day of the Virginia Beach drunk driving accident. Police and investigators believe the defendant lost control of his delivery box truck. When the driver attempted to regain control, he over-corrected and then crossed the median before striking the victim's automobile.

The defendant is facing several serious charges including involuntary manslaughter, maiming due to DUI, felony hit-and-run causing death, first offense DUI and operating a vehicle on a suspended license. He allegedly fled the scene of the accident according to witnesses but was found close to the scene near a barn.

Another young female who was a passenger in the victim's SUV suffered serious injuries as a result of the drunk driving accident. She is currently still in recovery at a Virginia hospital. Reportedly, a passenger in the defendant's delivery vehicle also suffered serious injuries.

The world already knows how devastating drunk driving accidents can be. Yet they still happen in Virginia and elsewhere in the nation at an alarming rate. While victims of these accidents often feel powerless to make change in the aftermath, the law does offer some options to help victims move forward. Personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits can be powerful tools as they force the world to take notice and provide victims with a legal remedy.
