2 Henrico motorists are killed in a crash along Interstate 295

Both the driver and passenger of a Jeep Grand Cherokee lost their lives in a multi-car crash on Monday, October 2. The accident occurred just before 2:45 p.m. near Exit 31 along Interstate 295 (I-295) in Henrico County.

Witnesses reported seeing another Jeep, a 2000 Cherokee, traveling northbound along I-295 immediately prior to when the crash occurred. They said that the SUV's driver appeared to be slowing as he prepared to get off the highway's off ramp when he was struck from behind by an 18-wheeler that had been following him.

It's reportedly then that the 2000 Jeep's driver lost control of his vehicle. His car ended up back in one of the lanes from which he had just exited. Then his truck collided with a 2013 Grand Cherokee.

The impact of that secondary collision resulted in both of the Jeep drivers losing control of their vehicles. They initially were pushed into I-295's left shoulder, then into the median, before both eventually overturned.

Virginia State Police, who responded to the crash scene, found both adult occupants of the 2013 Jeep deceased. The male driver had apparently not been wearing a seat belt. He was ejected from his vehicle in the crash. His female passenger was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, but still didn't survive it.

As for the 2000 Jeep's 17-year-old driver, he was reportedly wearing a seat belt in the crash. Although he suffered serious injuries, he's expected to survive them.

The 61-year-old trucker from North Dakota who is believed to have caused this crash apparently didn't suffer any injuries. He was cited for reckless driving at the accident scene, but not taken into custody. It's unclear if further charges will be filed against him as the investigation into the crash continues.

Generally, truckers are carrying heavy loads, so they can't stop as easily or quickly as cars and can overwhelm vehicles with their size. This makes motorists who are struck by truckers particularly vulnerable to serious injury or death.

If you've been seriously injured after being struck by a tractor-trailer, a Richmond truck accident attorney can advise you of your right to file a lawsuit in your case.
